Symptoms

Residual Heat: Persistent low-grade fever or a subjective sensation of heat that won't disappear after a flu or infection.

Irritability & Thirst: Restlessness, dry mouth, excessive thirst, and a parched throat.

Stomach Dysfunction (Qi Ni): Nausea, urges to vomit, hiccups, or lack of appetite because the heat is "attacking" the stomach.

Qi Deficiency: Extreme fatigue, shortness of breath, and spontaneous sweating.

Tongue: Red body with little or no coating (a sign of fluid damage).

Pulse: Deficient (Xu) and rapid (Shuo).

Posology

Granules
 4.5g to 9g per day, divided into two or three doses.

Raw Herbs
Boil in 1000–1200ml of water and drink 1 to 3 cups per day.

Description

Zhu Ye Shi Gao Tang is a modification of Bai Hu Tang, but made gentler and more nourishing for a body already weakened by illness.

Dan Zhu Ye and Shi Gao are the Chiefs; they clear residual heat from the chest and stomach, relieving irritability and thirst.

Ren Shen and Geng Mi act as Deputies; they tonify the Qi of the Spleen and Stomach, providing the energy needed for recovery.

Mai Men Dong nourishes Yin and moistens the dryness caused by the fever.

Zhi Ban Xia is crucial here; it descends "rebellious" Stomach Qi, stopping nausea and harmonizing the Middle Burner.

Zhi Gan Cao harmonizes the formula and protects the center.

Contraindications

CONTRAINDICATED in the early stages of a cold or flu (when the pathogen is still on the surface).

Do not use in cases of Stomach Cold or chronic diarrhea.

If the tongue coating is thick and greasy, avoid this formula until the dampness has been cleared.
