Symptoms

Joint and muscle pain that feels "heavy" or "sore."

Fixed pain (it doesn't move as much as pure Wind-Bi).

Swelling of the joints (edema).

Difficulty moving the limbs or a sensation of "lead" in the legs.

Worse in cold and damp weather.

Tongue: Pale or swollen with a thick, white, and greasy/slippery coating.

Pulse: Soft (Ru) and moderate (Huan), or wiry (Xian) and slippery.

Dang Gui (Angelica sinensis)

Posology

Granules
3 to 9g per day after main meals, diluted in hot water.

Raw Herbs
Boil in 1000–1200ml of water and drink 1 to 3 cups per day.

Description

Yi Yi Ren Tang focuses on "draining the swamp" while "opening the roads." It treats both the accumulation of fluid in the joints and the cold that locks it there.

Yi Yi Ren is the chief; it leaches dampness from the muscles and bones and strengthens the Spleen.

Cang Zhu aggressively dries dampness in the middle burner and lower limbs.

Gui Zhi "unfreeze" the channels and release the exterior, moving the Qi and Blood.

Qiang Huo specifically guides the herbs to the upper body and joints to dispel Wind.

Dang Gui and Chuan Xiong nourish and move the Blood; as the saying goes, "To treat Wind, first treat the Blood; once Blood moves, Wind will naturally extinguish."

Contraindications

Contraindicated for Heat Bi (red, hot, swollen joints—use Bai Hu Jia Gui Zhi Tang instead).

Not for use in cases of severe Yin Deficiency with dryness.
