This pattern is blood stasis in the “mansion of blood” above the diaphragm, obstructing the movement of qi and blood. It causes chest and hypochondrial pain, fixed, piercing headaches, hiccups, choking when drinking, dry heaves, and depression or low spirits with a warm chest sensation. The stasis and constrained qi may generate heat and fire, leading to palpitations, insomnia, irritability, extreme mood swings, and evening tidal fever. Dark red tongue with spots, purplish lips or complexion, and a choppy or wiry pulse are characteristic signs.
