This formula addresses lurking fire in the Lungs caused by constrained heat. It treats coughing, wheezing, and afternoon fevers, along with dry mouth, thin rapid pulse, and a red tongue with yellow coating. The heat causes Lung qi to rebel and injures Lung yin, while also making the skin feel hot to the touch. Symptoms worsen in the afternoon due to the Lung’s yin cycle and must be distinguished from Kidney yin deficiency patterns.

This formula treats constraint caused by lurking fire in the Lungs using a strategy of clearing heat and draining fire while calming wheezing. The chief herb, dry-fried Mori Cortex (chao sang bai pi), drains constrained heat from the Lungs to stop coughing and wheezing, combining a moistening nature with an acrid flavor that avoids harming the Lungs, making it suitable for children. The deputy, Lycii Cortex (di gu pi), sweet, bland, and bitter, clears heat from deficiency in the Kidneys and drains lurking fire from the Lungs, venting retained heat pathogens that may cause tidal fevers. The chief and deputy, both root barks, reflect the traditional association of plant bark with Lung health. Dosages are adjusted according to whether the heat is from constraint or deficiency. Assistants Glycyrrhizae Radix preparata (zhi gan cao) and nonglutinous rice (jing mi) protect the Stomach from the cold properties of the other herbs and, via the mother-child method, support the Lungs through the Spleen and Stomach.
