Xiao Jian Zhong Tang works by "constructing" (Jian) the Middle Burner. It uses the "Sweet and Warm" method to generate Qi and the "Sour and Sweet" method to generate Yin and Blood.
Yi Tang (Maltose) is the chief; it is highly nourishing and warming, specifically targeting the Spleen to stop pain and tonify deficiency.
Gui Zhi warms the Middle and dispels cold.
Bai Shao is used in a double dose (compared to Gui Zhi Tang) to soften the Liver, nourish the Blood, and stop the abdominal spasms (pain).
Sheng Jiang and Da Zao harmonize the protective (Wei) and nutritive (Ying) levels while supporting the Spleen's transformative function.
Zhi Gan Cao assists the Maltose in tonifying the Qi and harmonizing the herbs.
Contraindicated for Excess Heat patterns (high fever, red face, thirst for cold).
Not for use in cases of Damp-Heat (yellow greasy tongue coating) as the sweet ingredients will aggravate dampness.
Not suitable for abdominal pain caused by Food Stagnation.
Use with caution in diabetic patients due to the high maltose content.
