Prof. Huang Huang Formula
Fever-Breaking Decoction
This is a modified formula based on Xiao Chai Hu Tang. It is a formula for viral influenza. It has the function to break a fever and promote sweating by cooling and acridity. It is applicable to those with upper respiratory tract infection, and unabated fever after sweating has occurred.
Fever: Persistent high fever or alternating chills and fever (Shao Yang pattern).
Respiratory/Throat: Severe sore throat, swollen tonsils, or red, swollen glands in the neck.
Inflammation: Redness, swelling, and heat in any part of the body, including localized infections.
General Heat Signs: Bitter taste in the mouth, dry throat, thirst, and irritability.
Digestive: Loss of appetite, nausea, or a feeling of fullness in the chest and hypochondrium.
Tongue: Red body with a yellow coating.
Pulse: Wiry (Xian) and rapid (Shuo).
Ingredients
Chai Hu (Bupleurum chinense)
Raw Herbs 40g Granules 34.8g
Huang Qin (Scutellaria baicalensis)
Raw Herbs 15g Granules 13.0g
Lian Qiao (Forsythia suspensa)
Raw Herbs 50g Granules 43.5g
Gan Cao (Glycyrrhiza uralensis)
Raw Herbs 10g Granules 8.7g
Granules: 3 to 6g per dose, 3 times per day during the acute fever stage.
Note: Take with warm water. This formula is typically used for short-term "firefighting" until the fever breaks.
Tui Re Tang uses a synergistic approach to "vent" heat and neutralize toxins.
Chai Hu is the Chief; it harmonizes the Shao Yang level and "lifts" the heat to the surface so it can be released.
Huang Qin is the Deputy; it specifically clears heat from the Upper Burner and Lungs, working perfectly with Chai Hu to drain fire from the Liver/Gallbladder.
Lian Qiao acts as the Assistant; it is a powerful anti-toxic herb that breaks up "knotted" heat and reduces swelling in the throat and lymph nodes.
Gan Cao is the Messenger; it harmonizes the bitter nature of the other herbs and protects the Stomach Qi, while also providing a mild anti-inflammatory effect.
Contraindications
STRICTLY CONTRAINDICATED for Yin Deficiency Heat (night sweats, thin pulse, no actual fever).
Not for use in cases of Spleen/Stomach Cold (loose stools, cold limbs, pale tongue).
Use with caution in patients with very low blood pressure.
