Description
Tian Ma Gou Teng Yin is a complex, balanced formula that addresses both the Branch (the high pressure/wind) and the Root (the deficiency).
The Wind-Stoppers (Tian Ma & Gou Teng): These are the "Commanders" for neurological wind. Tian Ma is the most effective herb for dizziness, while Gou Teng specifically clears heat and stops tremors.
The Heavy Anchor (Shi Jue Ming): Avelone Shell is a heavy mineral. It acts as a "weight" to physically pull the rising Yang energy back down from the head.
The Fire Extinguishers (Huang Qin & Zhi Zi): These bitter, cold herbs drain the excess heat from the Liver and Gallbladder channels.
The Kidney/Liver Roots (Du Zhong & Sang Ji Sheng): These herbs nourish the Kidneys and Liver. By strengthening the "Root," they ensure the Yang stays anchored in the lower body.
The Downward Conductor (Niu Xi): Achyranthes directs the blood and heat downward, effectively "draining" the pressure from the head.
The Spirit Calmers (Fu Shen & Ye Jiao Teng): These herbs soothe the Heart and nourish the Blood to help with the associated insomnia and irritability.
Posology
Granules
3 to 9g daily, divided into 2 doses, taken with warm water.
Raw Plants
Decoct in 1000ml of water. CRITICAL: Gou Teng should be added in the last 10–15 minutes of boiling; over-cooking it destroys the active alkaloids needed to lower blood pressure.
Cautions
Not indicated for dizziness caused by Qi or Blood Deficiency (where the face is pale and the pulse is weak). Using these clearing herbs in a deficient patient will cause them to feel even more lightheaded. Use with caution in those with very weak digestion (Spleen Deficiency). Discontinue once the blood pressure stabilizes and the "rushing" sensation in the head subsides.
