Yin-Nourishing & Blood-Moving • Sinew-Strengthening & Leg-Unblocking Formula

Symptoms

Lower Limb Weakness: Difficulty walking, "heavy" legs, or a feeling of "rubber" knees.

Circulatory Issues: Numbness, tingling, or "pins and needles" in the feet and calves.

Pain: Chronic aching in the legs that worsens at night or after standing for long periods.

Heat/Dryness: Dry skin on the legs, cramps (especially nocturnal), and a sensation of heat in the soles of the feet.

Vascular Signs: Visible spider veins or dark, purple-ish discoloration of the skin on the ankles.

Tongue: Red or dusky body (purple tint) with scanty coating or cracks.

Pulse: Thin (Xi) and choppy (Se) or wiry (Xian).

Posology

Granules: 4.5 to 9g per day, divided into two doses.

Note: Best taken after light exercise or a warm foot bath to enhance the formula's "downward-moving" effect on the circulation.

Description

Si Wei Jian Bu Tang focuses on the "Lower Burner" to ensure that Blood and Fluids reach the furthest extremities.

Dan Shen is the Chief; it aggressively moves the Blood and breaks up stasis in the micro-vessels of the legs while cooling the Blood.

Chi Shao acts as the Deputy; it assists in moving the Blood and specifically addresses the pain and "heat" associated with stasis and inflammation.

Shi Hu is the nourishing Assistant; it replenishes the Yin and Fluids (Kidney/Stomach), ensuring the tendons and muscles remain "moist" and flexible, preventing cramps.

Huai Niu Xi is the Messenger and Guide; it is famous for its ability to direct all medicinal actions to the lower body (knees and feet) while strengthening the bones and sinews.

Contraindications

Pregnancy: Contraindicated due to the strong blood-moving and downward-directing nature of Niu Xi and Dan Shen.

Excessive Menstrual Bleeding: Use with caution as it may increase flow.

Diarrhea: Not suitable for those with very weak digestion due to the "cold" nature of Shi Hu and Chi Shao.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Decoction
Place the medicinals in 1100 mL water and boil until 300 mL remains. Take the decoction warm，in 2 to 3 doses.

Suitable Diseases and Conditions

Diabetic foot，diabetic nephropathy，deep vein thrombosis of lower limbs，and fracture of lower limbs that cause lumbar pain and weakness，lower limb pain，numbness，cramps，and puffy swelling.


Modifications

  1. For emaciated physique，cramps in lower limbs，dry and bound stool，combine with Shao Yao Gan Cao Tang.
  2. For obese physique，soft abdomen，numbness in four limbs，copious sweating，and puffy swelling，combine with Huang Qi Gui Zhi Wu Wu Tang.
  3. For dry and scaly skin in the lower limbs that resembles snakeskin，or thrombosis，combine with Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan.

Cautions

This formula invigorates blood and eliminate blood stasis.It primarily treats diseases with blood stasis，such as pain in the waist and lower limbs.Use with caution for those without blood stasis.
