Qi Pi Tang (Decoction to Awaken and Strengthen the Spleen) addresses the classic disharmony between the Liver and the Spleen (Shao Yang and Tai Yin). When emotional stress causes the Liver to stagnate, it "invades" a weakened Spleen, resulting in pain, spasms, and poor digestion.
Ren Shen and Bai Zhu serve as the essential tonifying pair; they strengthen Spleen Qi, bolster the transport and transformation of nutrients, and combat systemic fatigue.
Chai Hu, Xiang Fu, and Qing Pi form a powerful Qi-regulating trio. Chai Hu coaxes open and smooths Liver Qi; Xiang Fu releases stagnation in the Middle Jiao; and Qing Pi assertively breaks up accumulation and severe abdominal bloating.
Dang Gui and Chuan Xiong nourish and invigorate the blood. Because "Qi is the commander of Blood," moving stagnant Qi requires mobilizing the Blood to effectively stop fixed, boring pain.
Yan Hu Suo and Yu Jin are specialized pain-relievers (analgesics). Yan Hu Suo quickly halts abdominal cramping and spasms, while Yu Jin purges the heat generated by emotional stagnation and calms the spirit.
Gan Cao harmonizes the dynamic between the heavy tonics and the highly dispersing herbs, protecting the stomach lining from irritation.
STRICTLY CONTRAINDICATED DURING PREGNANCY due to the presence of herbs with strong blood-moving and downward Qi-breaking actions (such as Chuan Xiong, Yan Hu Suo, and Qing Pi).
Do not use in cases of active bleeding or menorrhagia without professional guidance.
Use with caution in cases of extreme Yin and fluid deficiency (excessive dry signs).
