MU FANG JI TANG

Fluid-Draining & Chest-Unblocking • Heat-Clearing & Qi-Descending Formula

Symptoms

Focal distension and a sensation of "stuffiness" in the chest and epigastrium.

Shortness of breath (especially when lying down).

Edema (swelling), particularly in the upper body or face.

Palpitations or a "thumping" heart sensation.

A red or flushed face (due to Heat being pushed upward by the fluids).

Tongue: Red body with a thick, greasy, or slippery white or yellow coating.

Pulse: Deep (Chen) and wiry (Xian), or slippery (Hua) and rapid.

Posology

Granules
3 to 9g per day after main meals, diluted in hot water.

Raw Herbs
Boil in 1000–1200ml of water and drink 1 to 3 cups per day.

Description

Mu Fang Ji Tang uses an unusual but brilliant combination of very cold and warm herbs to break through stubborn fluid blockages in the chest.

Mu Fang Ji is the chief; it is a powerful diuretic and "fluid-breaker" that specifically targets dampness and edema in the upper body and joints.

Shi Gao (Gypsum) is the deputy; it clears the "stifling" Heat that often accompanies long-term fluid stagnation. In this formula, it is used in a very high dose.

Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig) provides the "Yang spark" needed to transform the cold fluids and assist the Heart Qi in moving the blood/water.

Ren Shen (Ginseng) supports the "Zheng Qi" (Correct Qi), ensuring that the strong draining actions of Fang Ji and Shi Gao do not exhaust the patient’s underlying strength.

Contraindications

STRICTLY CONTRAINDICATED for edema due to Kidney Yang Deficiency (cold limbs, pale tongue—use Zhen Wu Tang instead).

Not for use in cases of severe Spleen Deficiency without significant fluid accumulation.

Pregnancy: Use with extreme caution due to the powerful downward-draining nature of Mu Fang Ji.
