Symptoms

Acute Skin Lesions: Localized redness, swelling, and throbbing pain (early-stage boils, carbuncles, or abscesses).

Unripened Nodules: Hard, painful lumps that have not yet "ripened" or formed a soft center of pus.

Systemic Exterior Signs: Accompanying fever and chills, headache, or body aches, indicating the body is fighting an active invasion.

Upper Burner Involvement: Sore throat, swollen lymph nodes in the neck, or localized itching associated with heat.

Key Indicator: "Toxic Heat Trapped by Exterior Cold"—where an internal infection is "locked in" by a constricted surface, causing intense pressure and inflammation.

Tongue: Red body with a thin yellow or white coating.

Description

Lian Qiao Bai Du San is a sophisticated "External-Internal" strategy. It clears internal toxicity while simultaneously "venting" the pathogen through the exterior to prevent it from sinking deeper into the tissues.

The Detox Chiefs (Lian Qiao & Jin Yin Hua): This duo clears Heat and resolves Toxicity at the Blood level, specifically targeting the skin and throat to stop the infection from spreading.

The Surface Venters (Fang Feng, Qiang Huo & Du Huo): These herbs expel Wind-Dampness from the surface. By "opening the windows" of the body, they help to "lift" the trapped internal heat out through the pores.

Regulating the Pivot (Chai Hu & Qian Hu): These assist in venting the exterior and regulating the movement of Qi, ensuring the body's internal pressure doesn't build up at the site of the abscess.

Circulating the Blood (Chuan Xiong & Dang Gui): "If blood moves, the swelling subsides." Moving and cooling the blood is essential to reduce localized pressure and prevent blood stasis from turning into stagnant pus.

Opening the Upper Burner (Jie Geng & Zhi Ke): These regulate Lung Qi to promote the circulation of fluids. Jie Geng acts as a "guide," directing the anti-toxic effect upward to the throat and face.

Posology

Granules

3 to 9g per day, usually taken after main meals, diluted in hot water.

Raw Herbs

Boil in 1000–1200ml of water down to approximately 600ml. Drink 1 to 3 cups per day while the condition is acute.

Cautions

Not for Matured Abscesses. This formula is contraindicated once an abscess has fully ripened and is discharging thin, watery pus; at this stage, the pattern has shifted from "Excess" to "Deficiency." It is not suitable for those with Spleen/Stomach Deficiency (tendency toward diarrhea) due to the cold nature of the clearing herbs. Use with caution during pregnancy. Discontinue use once the redness and swelling have significantly subsided.
