PLANT DESCRIPTION

This is painful obstruction (Bi syndrome) due to wind and dampness with underlying qi and blood deficiency. Wind, a yang pathogen, attacks when nutritive qi or blood is weak, while dampness, a yin pathogen, obstructs the qi dynamic. The impaired circulation of qi and blood causes heaviness, stiffness, numbness, and limited movement, mainly in the upper body (neck, shoulders, back). The white tongue coating and moderate pulse reflect the deficiency and dampness. The condition is confined to the channels and collaterals, without internal organ involvement.

HEALTH Characteristics

This formula treats wind-cold-dampness with underlying deficiency of protective and nutritive qi, focusing on expelling wind, dispelling dampness, and supporting qi and blood. The chief herbs, Notopterygii Rhizoma (qiang huo) and Saposhnikoviae Radix (fang feng), target wind-dampness in the upper body. Deputies Angelicae sinensis Radix (dang gui) and Paeoniae Radix (shao yao) nourish blood and harmonize nutritive qi, while Astragali Radix (huang qi) strengthens protective qi. Assistants like Curcumae longae Rhizoma (jiang huang) move qi and invigorate blood, especially for shoulder and arm pain. Glycyrrhizae Radix (gan cao), Jujubae Fructus (da zao), and Zingiberis Rhizoma recens (sheng jiang) harmonize the formula and enhance its action in dispersing wind and dampness.
