PLANT DESCRIPTION

This pattern is characterized by heat above and cold below, with stifling chest sensation, irritability, nausea, abdominal pain, white greasy tongue coating, and a wiry pulse. It arises from an external cold pathogen affecting the middle burner, causing rebellious Stomach qi, qi stagnation, and impaired Spleen function, which leads to diarrhea. Fever and slight chills reflect disharmony between nutritive and protective qi, while the tongue and pulse indicate cold pathogen in the middle burner.

This formula is a variation of Xiao Chai Hu Tang, in which Scutellariae Radix (huang qin) and Zingiberis Rhizoma recens (sheng jiang) are replaced with Cinnamomi Ramulus (gui zhi) and Zingiberis Rhizoma (gan jiang). The chief herb, Coptidis Rhizoma (huang lian), drains heat from the chest and harmonizes the Stomach. The deputy herbs warm and disperse cold, relieve nausea, and expand the chest. The assistant herbs strengthen the Qi and Spleen, supporting the middle burner’s normal functions, while the envoy, Glycyrrhizae Radix preparata (zhi gan cao), harmonizes the actions of the formula.
