Description
Huang Lian Tang treats a cold–heat complex in the middle burner, where heat accumulates in the Stomach while cold remains in the Intestines. This disharmony disrupts the normal ascending and descending functions of Qi, leading to vomiting, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea.
Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) is the chief herb. It clears heat from the Stomach and upper burner, addressing irritability, nausea, and focal distension.
Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) warms the middle and dispels internal cold, particularly in the lower burner, helping relieve abdominal pain and diarrhea.
Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) assists in warming and harmonizing the nutritive and defensive Qi, ensuring proper circulation.
Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma preparatum) transforms phlegm and directs rebellious Stomach Qi downward to stop vomiting.
Dan Shen (Codonopsis Radix) Tonifies Spleen and Lung Qi, supports digestion, and generates fluids. Used for fatigue, weak appetite, shortness of breath, and general Qi deficiency.
Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus) nourishes Qi and protects the middle burner.
Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix) harmonizes the formula and moderates the interaction between bitter-cold and warming herbs.
Together, the formula clears heat, warms cold, restores proper Qi movement, and harmonizes the Stomach and Intestines, making it suitable for complex digestive presentations with simultaneous signs of heat and cold.
