Strengthen Defensive Qi & Harmonize Ying-Wei • The "External Shield" Formula
Strengthen Defensive Qi & Harmonize Ying-Wei • The "External Shield" Formula
Symptoms
Spontaneous Sweating: Sweating that occurs during the day without exercise or heat, or "leaking" sweat easily when moving.
Susceptibility to Wind: A constant, nagging aversion to drafts or air conditioning; a feeling that "the wind goes right through me."
Recurrent Infections: A history of frequent colds, flus, or respiratory infections that take a long time to resolve.
General Qi Deficiency: Mild shortness of breath, a quiet voice, and a persistent "heavy" fatigue.
Key Indicator: "Unstable Exterior due to Wei Qi Deficiency"—where the body's "Defensive Qi" is too weak to "lock the gate" of the skin, leading to a loss of fluids (sweat) and a constant entry point for pathogens.
Tongue: Pale and slightly swollen with a thin white coating.
Pulse: Floating (Fu) and weak (Xu) or moderate (Huan).

Description
Gui Zhi Jia Huang Qi Tang creates a "Double-Lock" on the exterior. It balances the movement of the Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) levels while adding a tonifying "seal."
The Shield-Builder (Huang Qi): This is the star addition. Huang Qi is the king of tonifying the Wei Qi. It physically "lifts" the energy to the surface and "consolidates" the pores, stopping the spontaneous sweating and preventing Wind from entering.
The Harmonizing Core (Gui Zhi & Bai Shao): Gui Zhi warms the channels and pushes out any lingering mild pathogens, while Bai Shao gathers the Yin and Blood to prevent the formula from being too dispersing. Together, they regulate the "opening and closing" of the pores.
The Digestive Generator (Sheng Jiang & Da Zao): Because Wei Qi is produced by the Spleen and Stomach (from the essence of food), these herbs ensure the "source" of the shield is well-nourished.
Posology
Granules
3 to 9g daily, divided into 2 doses, taken with warm water.
Raw Plants
Decoct in 1000ml of water. Drink 1 to 2 cups daily. For those with chronic weakness, this formula is often taken over a period of weeks to "rebuild the wall" before the change of seasons.
Cautions
Not indicated for Acute Excess Cold (where there is no sweat and a very tight pulse). If you use Huang Qi when a strong pathogen is currently "trapped" inside, you may "tonify the pathogen," making the illness last longer. Avoid use in cases of Interior Heat (red tongue, yellow coating, night sweats). Discontinue use once the "susceptibility to wind" and "leaking sweat" have stabilized.
