Dampness-Drying & Phlegm-Transforming • The Ancestral Phlegm Formula
Dampness-Drying & Phlegm-Transforming • The Ancestral Phlegm Formula
Symptoms
Productive Cough: Copious, white, easy-to-expectorate sputum. It often feels like there is a "constant supply" of phlegm in the throat or chest.
Digestive Oppression: Epigastric fullness, nausea, or even vomiting of clear fluids/mucus.
Systemic Heaviness: A heavy sensation in the head (like wearing a tight hat) or dizziness/vertigo caused by "Phlegm-Damp" clouding the sensory orifices.
Palpitations: A distinct "thumping" in the chest, technically categorized as "Phlegm intimidating the Heart."
Key Indicator: "Spleen Deficiency leading to Phlegm"—where the Spleen is the "Source" of phlegm and the Lungs are the "Container" of phlegm.
Tongue: Swollen with a thick, white, greasy (oily) coating; Pulse: Slippery (Hua) and moderate.

Description
Er Chen Tang is based on a simple but profound logic: to get rid of phlegm, you must move the Qi and dry the dampness. If the Qi doesn't move, fluids stagnate; if fluids stagnate, they "cook" into phlegm.
The Drying Chief (Ban Xia): This is the most powerful herb for drying dampness in the middle burner. It "descends" rebellious Qi, which is why it is the first choice for nausea and "glomus" (stuffiness) in the chest.
The Qi-Moving Deputy (Chen Pi): Phlegm is essentially "frozen" Qi. Chen Pi "thaws" it by moving the Qi. By regulating the middle burner, it ensures the "pathways" are open so the dampness has somewhere to go.
The Leaching Assistant (Fu Ling): While Ban Xia dries from the inside, Fu Ling drains from the bottom. It leaches dampness through the urine, effectively "emptying the damp-reservoir" of the Spleen.
The Harmonizer (Gan Cao): It buffers the acridity of the Ban Xia and Chen Pi, protecting the stomach lining and preventing the formula from being too harsh.
Posology
Granules: 3 to 9g daily, divided into 2–3 doses, taken with warm water.
Raw Plants: Decoct in 1000–1200ml of water. Drink 1 to 3 cups per day. Because it is highly aromatic, the steam from the decoction can also help clear the nasal passages.
Contraindications
Strictly contraindicated for Yin Deficiency (dry cough, no tongue coating, night sweats). This formula is aggressively drying; using it in a dry-lung patient is like putting a hairdryer on a desert—it will cause bleeding and severe irritation. For Heat-Phlegm (yellow, sticky, foul-smelling mucus), it must be modified with cooling herbs like Huang Qin or Gua Lou.
