Description

Dang Gui Liu Huang Tang is a sophisticated three-pronged strategy. It doesn't just stop the sweating; it addresses the internal "drought" and "volcano" that cause it.

Dang Gui, Sheng Di, and Shu Di nourish the Blood and Yin. By replenishing the fluids (the "water"), they provide the substance needed to anchor the Yang and cool the body.

Huang Lian, Huang Qin, and Huang Bai clear Fire from all three Burners (Heart, Lung, and Kidney/Lower Burner). They "drain the volcano," removing the excess heat that forces fluids out through the skin.

Huang Qi is used here in a double dose compared to the other herbs. Its role is to stabilize the Wei Qi (Protective Qi) and "close the pores," preventing the leakage of fluids while the other herbs work on the internal balance.

Contraindications

Contraindicated for Spleen/Stomach Deficiency with diarrhea or bloating (the "Yellows" are very cold and bitter, which can damage a weak digestive system).

Not for use in cases of sweating due to Exterior Cold or Yang deficiency.

Discontinue use once the night sweats have stopped to avoid over-cooling the body.

Use with caution during pregnancy.

HEALTH Characteristics

How the Formula Works

Dang Gui (Angelica Root) – nourishes the blood, supports fluids, and moistens dryness.
Sheng Di Huang & Shu Di Huang (Raw & Prepared Rehmannia Root) – enrich yin, nourish essence, and control internal heat.
Huang Lian (Coptis Root), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Huang Bai (Phellodendron Bark) – bitter, cooling herbs that drain excess fire from the body and reduce irritability.
Huang Qi (Astragalus Root) – tonifies qi, stabilizes the exterior, and prevents excessive sweating.
Together, these herbs balance yin and yang, nourish blood and fluids, and control internal heat, restoring energy, moisture, and exterior stability.

Traditional Actions

Nourishes the yin and blood

Drains excess fire from the body

Stabilizes the exterior to prevent night sweating

Supports energy, vitality, and fluid balance

Traditional Indications

Used for night sweats caused by yin deficiency with excess internal fire, including:
* Fever or low-grade internal heat
* Nighttime sweating
* Red face, dry mouth, parched lips

* Irritability and restlessness
* Dry stools, dark and scanty urine
* Red, dry tongue
* Rapid pulse

Underlying pattern: Yin deficiency fails to control yang, causing internal heat that pushes fluids outward as sweat, especially during sleep.

Traditional Understanding

In Chinese medicine, the Heart represents yang and the upper body, while the Kidneys represent yin and the lower body. When yin is deficient, it cannot restrain yang, leading to raging internal fire and night sweats.

This formula:
Enriches yin and blood to nourish and moisten the body

Drains excess fire to calm irritability and internal heat

Strengthens qi to stabilize the exterior and prevent excessive sweating

Restores balance between protective qi and nutritive yin
By addressing both the root (yin deficiency) and branch (excess fire), this formula promotes restful sleep, stable energy, and overall balance.

Suggested Use

Traditionally prepared as a warm decoction, taken before meals. Modern forms may include granules or concentrated extracts.

Use under the guidance of a qualified healthcare practitioner.
