This formula treats wheezing due to wind-cold on the exterior and phlegm-heat in the interior. The condition occurs when Lung qi is obstructed, producing thick, yellow sputum, labored breathing, a greasy yellow tongue coating, and a slippery, rapid pulse. Fever and chills may also be present if the exterior condition persists.

This formula treats wheezing caused by phlegm-heat obstructing the Lung qi. Its main strategy is to descend and disperse Lung qi while transforming phlegm and clearing heat. Ephedrae Herba (ma huang) redirects Lung qi and releases the exterior, while Gingko Semen (bai guo) transforms phlegm and contains Lung qi leakage. Mori Cortex (sang bai pi) and Scutellariae Radix (huang qin) clear heat and stop wheezing, and Armeniacae Semen (xing ren) assists in expanding the Lungs. Perillae Fructus (zi su zi), Pinelliae Rhizoma preparatum (zhi ban xia), and Farfarae Flos (kuan dong hua) support descending qi and phlegm expulsion. Glycyrrhizae Radix (gan cao) harmonizes the formula.
