Description

Dang Gui Bu Xue Tang is a masterclass in TCM strategy. While its name emphasizes "Supplementing Blood" (Bu Xue), it uses five times more Huang Qi (Qi tonic) than Dang Gui (Blood tonic). This is because Blood cannot be generated without the transformative power of Qi.

Huang Qi (Astragalus) is the "Chief" herb. It powerfully tonifies the Primary Qi (Yuan Qi) and the Spleen/Lung Qi. By strengthening the "source," it provides the energy necessary for the body to manufacture new Blood cells.

Dang Gui (Angelica) is the "Deputy" herb. It provides the material substrate to nourish the Blood and harmonize its flow.

Together, they resolve "Blood Deficiency Heat," a paradoxical state where the body feels hot because there isn't enough Blood to anchor the Yang.

Contraindications

Contraindicated for patterns of Excess Heat (high fever, red face, strong pulse).

Not suitable for patients with Exterior syndromes (common cold or flu) as tonics can "trap" the pathogen inside.

Avoid use in cases of severe Dampness or stagnation, as Huang Qi can aggravate fullness.

Use with caution in patients with Yin deficiency with heat signs.

HEALTH Characteristics

How the Formula Works

This formula treats Blood deficiency as the root and floating Yang as the branch.

  • Astragali Radix (Huang Qi) is used in a large dosage to strongly tonify Spleen Qi and secure the exterior. By consolidating Qi and preventing its outward leakage, it anchors Yang internally and supports the generation of Blood through middle burner transformation.

  • Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Dang Gui) nourishes and invigorates the Blood without being cloying. It supports the creation of new Blood and replenishes the “Qi within the Blood,” making it an ideal partner to Huang Qi.

Together, the formula draws floating Yang inward, strengthens the Qi-Blood relationship, and restores the body’s ability to self-regulate Heat arising from deficiency.
