Description
Da Huang Mu Dan Pi Tang is a highly specialized strategy for clearing "Toxic Heat" and breaking up "Blood Stasis" in the intestines. It is historically the primary formula for early-stage intestinal abscesses (such as appendicitis in a TCM context). Da Huang and Mang Xiao form the purgative core; they drain heat downwards, soften inflammatory masses, and clear the intestinal tract. Mu Dan Pi cools the blood and resolves stasis, specifically targeting heat trapped at the Xue (Blood) level. Tao Ren assists in breaking up blood stasis and moving blood to reduce localized swelling and pain. Dong Gua Zi is the essential herb for "expelling pus" and clearing damp-heat from the intestines, acting directly on the site of inflammation.
Contraindications
Strictly contraindicated during pregnancy (High risk of miscarriage due to Da Huang and Tao Ren). Not for use in patients with weak digestion, Spleen deficiency, or chronic diarrhea. Use with extreme caution in elderly or debilitated patients. Should only be used for "Excess/Fullness" patterns; not for chronic, dull abdominal pain.
