Description

Ban Xia Hou Po Tang is a classic "Qi-moving" formula from the Golden Cabinet (Jin Gui Yao Lue). Its primary goal is to "open the clumps" and descend rebellious Qi. Unlike standard phlegm formulas, this specifically targets phlegm that has become entangled with stagnant Qi, creating a physical sensation without an actual physical mass.

Fa Ban Xia is the Chief herb. It is acrid and warm, specializing in drying dampness, transforming phlegm, and descending rebellious Stomach Qi to stop the "stuck" sensation.

Hou Po acts as the Deputy. It is a powerful Qi-descender that relieves the "stifling" feeling in the chest and helps Ban Xia dissipate the subjective feeling of a physical lump.

Fu Ling assists by leaching out the dampness that creates phlegm in the first place, ensuring the Spleen doesn't continue to produce the "mist" that clogs the throat.

Zi Su Ye (Perilla Leaf) is crucial here. It moves the Qi specifically in the Lung and Spleen channels, helping to "un-stifle" the chest and harmonize the Liver's influence over the throat.

Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) is traditionally added to harmonize the stomach and counteract any potential toxicity of the Ban Xia, while also helping to transform phlegm.

Together, these herbs act like a "sweep" for the throat and chest, clearing the emotional and physical "fog" that creates the plum-pit sensation.

Contraindications

Not recommended for patients with a dry, red tongue and a rapid pulse (Yin deficiency with Heat), as the herbs in this formula are very drying and warm. It is strictly for "Phlegm-Qi" stagnation and should not be used for sore throats caused by actual viral or bacterial infections (Heat Toxins). Consult a practitioner before use.
