Prof. Huang Huang Formula
Rectify Qi & Resolve Depression • Harmonize the Middle & Throat
This formula is a masterful clinical hybrid, combining Si Ni San (Frigid Extremities Powder) with Ban Xia Hou Po Tang (Pinellia and Magnolia Bark Decoction). It is the premier "Dual-Action" strategy for emotional disorders that manifest as physical blockages in both the throat and the digestive tract.
Symptoms
Foreign Body Sensation (Mei He Qi): The classic "Plum-Pit" sensation—feeling as if a lump is stuck in the throat that cannot be swallowed or coughed up.
Cold Limbs (Si Ni): Fingers and toes that feel cold while the trunk of the body is warm (caused by Qi "knotted" in the center and failing to reach the extremities).
Chest & Abdominal Oppression: A feeling of being "suffocated" or tightly bound in the chest, accompanied by bloating, gas, or distension.
Digestive Rebellion: Mild nausea, acid regurgitation, or "nervous stomach" symptoms like those found in IBS.
Key Indicator: "Qi Stagnation with Phlegm-Dampness"—where chronic stress (Liver Qi) has caused the digestion to "stall," leading to the accumulation of dampness that rises as a physical obstruction in the throat.
Tongue: Pink body with a white, greasy, or moist coating.
Pulse: Wiry (Xuan) and possibly Slippery (Hua).

Description
This formula acts as a "Physical and Emotional Decongestant." It treats the patient who feels "stuck" both in their mind and in their body.
Breaking the "Knot": The Si Ni San component (Chai Hu, Shao Yao, Zhi Ke, Gan Cao) focuses on the "Frustration" aspect. It unbinds the Liver Qi so that blood and warmth can finally reach the hands and feet.
Clearing the "Plum-Pit": The Ban Xia Hou Po Tang component addresses the physical manifestation of that stress—the "clump" of phlegm and Qi in the throat and the bloating in the belly.
Holistic Resonance: Because it harmonizes the Liver and Spleen, it is widely used for modern psychosomatic conditions, including anxiety, IBS, and hormonal imbalances (like PMS or perimenopause) where emotional tension causes physical "stuffiness."
Posology
Raw Herbs
Decoct in 1000ml of water down to 400ml. Drink in two divided doses.
Granules
4.5 to 9g daily, typically taken between or after meals.
Cautions
Not for Dryness or Yin Deficiency. If the patient has a red tongue with no coating and a dry, scratchy throat (rather than a "lump" sensation), this formula is too drying. Pregnancy: Use with caution and only under supervision due to the strong downward-moving nature of Hou Po and Ban Xia.
