World Sexual Health Day: A Traditional Chinese Medicine Perspective
Every year on September 4th, World Sexual Health Day reminds us that sexual wellbeing is an important part of our overall health.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), sexual health is not viewed in isolation. It reflects the balance of Qi, Blood, Yin, Yang and Essence (Jing) and is closely connected with both physical vitality and emotional wellbeing.
The Kidneys: Essence & Vitality
In TCM, the Kidneys (Shen) store Jing — Essence, which is associated with growth, reproduction, ageing and constitutional vitality.
Kidney Yin and Kidney Yang represent two complementary aspects of this system. Their balance is traditionally considered particularly important for reproductive and sexual vitality throughout different stages of life.
The Liver & Heart: Flow and Connection
The Liver (Gan) maintains the smooth flow of Qi. Emotional tension and stress may, from a TCM perspective, disrupt this flow, which is why emotional balance is considered when looking at sexual wellbeing.
The Heart (Xin) houses the Shen, connecting our physical experience with emotions, intimacy and mental wellbeing.
Together, these relationships remind us that sexual health is about much more than physical function.
Herbal Formulas Through the TCM Lens
Chinese herbal medicine approaches sexual wellbeing according to the individual's pattern of imbalance, rather than using one formula for everyone.
Depending on the pattern identified by a qualified practitioner, traditional strategies may include:
Sang Piao Xiao San — traditionally used when the focus is on strengthening the Kidneys, securing Essence and supporting the Heart–Kidney relationship.
Kidney Yang tonifying herbs, such as Yin Yang Huo (Epimedium), may be considered within formulas when signs of Kidney Yang deficiency are present.
Other approaches may focus instead on nourishing Kidney Yin, supporting Jing, regulating Liver Qi or nourishing Blood, depending on the individual presentation.
This is why correct pattern differentiation remains at the heart of Chinese herbal medicine.
A Holistic View of Sexual Wellbeing
From sleep and stress to emotional health, nutrition, energy and the natural stages of ageing, TCM encourages us to consider the whole person.
This World Sexual Health Day, we celebrate a broader understanding of sexual wellbeing — one based on balance, vitality, connection and self-awareness.
