Symptoms

Yin & Essence Deficiency: Low back pain, soreness and weakness in the knees, lightheadedness, dizziness, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and spontaneous nocturnal emissions or spermatorrhea.

Internal Heat & Dryness Signs: Dry throat and mouth (especially at night), mild hot flashes, low-grade afternoon fever, or warm palms and soles (five-palm heat).

Cognitive & Mental Signs: Restlessness, mental fatigue, brain fog, poor memory, and insomnia due to Yin failing to anchor the Spirit.

Digestive Status: Mild Spleen weakness underlying the Yin deficiency, making heavier Yin tonics difficult to digest without mild support.

Tongue: Red body with little coating, or a shiny, mirror-like tongue with absence of moss.

Pulse: Thready (Xi), rapid (Shu), or deep (Chen) and weak in the proximal (Kidney) positions.

Posology

Granules: 3 to 9g per day, divided into two or three doses.

Boil in 1000 or 1200ml of water and drink 1 to 3 cups per day.

Description

Zuo Gui Yin (Restoring the Left [Kidney] Drink) is Zhang Jing-yue's foundational, pure-nourishing formula designed to replenish Kidney Yin and Essence (Jing) without overloading the digestive system. Unlike its larger counterpart (Zuo Gui Wan), it is a milder, gentler strategy suitable for cases with underlying digestive fragility.

Shu Di Huang serves as the Chief herb, intensely filling the Kidney Essence, generating Blood, and building true Yin fluids.

Shan Yao and Shan Zhu Yu form the supporting pair (borrowed from Liu Wei Di Huang Wan); Shan Yaoreinforces the Spleen and stabilizes Essence, while Shan Zhu Yu astringes fluids, nourishes Liver Yin, and prevents the leakage of Kidney energy.

Gou Qi Zi acts as a crucial Deputy to enrich Kidney and Liver Yin, brighten the eyes, and restore the vital substance of the lower Jiao.

Fu Ling drains subtle dampness, clears latent turbid fluids, and supports the Spleen to ensure the rich Yin tonics are easily transformed and absorbed.

Zhi Gan Cao harmonizes all six herbs, buffers the stomach, and provides a gentle Qi-tonifying base to sustain long-term administration.

Contraindications

STRICTLY CONTRAINDICATED in cases of severe Spleen Yang Deficiency with watery diarrhea, abdominal bloating, or heavy damp-phlegm accumulation (thick, greasy tongue coating).

Do not use during acute exterior infections (such as cold or flu), as rich Yin tonics can trap the pathogen inside the body.
