Restore the Left (Kidney Yin) Decoction

Zuo Gui Yin is a classical formula used to nourish Kidney Yin and Essence (Jing) in cases of deep, chronic deficiency, particularly when depletion affects growth, reproduction, recovery, or ageing, and Heat signs are minimal or absent.

Compared to Zuo Gui Wan, this decoction form is slightly lighter and more flexible, making it suitable when strong replenishment is needed but digestion or tolerance is more delicate.

Clinical indications

Traditionally used in presentations such as:

Weakness or soreness of the lower back and knees

Fatigue or reduced vitality

Dizziness

Tinnitus

Delayed development or infertility

Dryness without strong Heat signs

Red or dry tongue with little coating

Thin or weak pulse

This formula treats Kidney Yin and Essence deficiency without pronounced deficiency Heat.
Symptoms arise from loss of foundational substances, rather than excess Fire, stagnation, or external pathogens.

Cautions

Not indicated for Yin deficiency with marked empty Heat

Use with caution in patients with weak digestion due to the nourishing, dense nature of the formula
