Zi Wan Tang (Aster Decoction) is a premier classical design specifically created to treat chronic Lung Qi and Yin deficiency complicated by residual Phlegm-Heat, coughing, and blood-streaked sputum.
Zi Wan acts as the Chief herb; warm yet moistening, it forcefully stops cough, transforms phlegm, and directs rebellious Lung Qi downward without causing dryness.
Zhe Bei Mu and Jie Geng assist in clearing phlegm and guiding the formula; Zhe Bei Mu clears heat and dissolves stubborn nodules/phlegm, while Jie Geng opens Lung Qi, soothes the throat, and carries the active herbs to the upper chest.
Ren Shen, Fu Ling, and Gan Cao form the essential Spleen-Qi tonifying foundation (Si Jun Zi Tang core), strengthening the source of fluid production to nourish the Lungs ("Earth generating Metal").E Jiao deeply nourishes Blood, moistens Lung Yin, and stops bleeding, directly healing damaged pulmonary vessels that cause hemoptysis.
Zhi Mu clears deficient heat from the Lungs and drains flaring internal fire to protect fluids.
Wu Wei Zi acts as an astringent keeper; it binds Lung Qi, prevents fluid leakage, and stops chronic coughing from exhausting the body's vital energy.
STRICTLY CONTRAINDICATED during acute initial stages of exterior Wind-Cold attacks (cold or flu) with fever, as astringent herbs (Wu Wei Zi, E Jiao) can trap the pathogen inside.
Use with caution in patients with severe Spleen Yang Deficiency with chronic watery diarrhea or severe damp-phlegm stagnation.
