YIN CHEN HAO TANG

Damp-Heat Clearing & Jaundice-Relieving • Liver-Draining & Stagnation-Purging Formula

Symptoms

Jaundice: Bright, "orange-like" yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes (sclera).

Abdominal distension and fullness (especially in the epigastrium).

Urinary distress: Scanty, dark, or deeply yellow/orange urine.

Absence of sweating, or sweating only from the head.

Thirst for cold drinks (but sometimes only small sips).

Constipation or difficult, "sluggish" bowel movements.

Tongue: Red body with a thick, yellow, and greasy/sticky coating.

Pulse: Slippery (Hua) and rapid (Shuo).

Ingredients

Yin Chen (Artemisia capillaris)
Raw Herbs 30g Granules 54.4g

Zhi Zi (Gardenia jasminoides)
Raw Herbs 15g Granules 27.3g

Da Huang (Rheum palmatum)
Raw Herbs 10g Granules 18.2g

Posology

Granules
3 to 9g per day after main meals, diluted in hot water.

Raw Herbs
Boil in 1000–1200ml of water and drink 1 to 3 cups per day.

Description

Yin Chen Hao Tang is a "triple-threat" formula that clears heat from the three burners simultaneously.

Yin Chen (Hao) is the chief; it is the premier herb for jaundice. It clears damp-heat from the Liver and Gallbladder and "leaches" it out.

Zhi Zi (Gardenia) is the deputy; it clears heat from all three burners and guides it downward into the urine.

Da Huang (Rhubarb) is the assistant; it purges the "Heat-Stagnation" through the stool, ensuring the damp-heat has a clear exit from the bowels.

Contraindications

STRICTLY CONTRAINDICATED for Yin Jaundice (dull, "smoky" yellow skin with cold limbs and pale tongue—use Yin Chen Zhu Fu Tang instead).

Not for use in cases of Spleen/Stomach Deficiency with loose stools or diarrhea.

Pregnancy: Generally contraindicated due to the strong purging action of Da Huang.

Discontinue use once the thick yellow tongue coating and jaundice resolve to avoid injuring the Spleen Yang.
