Harmonize the Stomach • Descend Rebellious Qi • Drain Phlegm-Fluids
Harmonize the Stomach • Descend Rebellious Qi • Drain Phlegm-Fluids
Symptoms
Fluid Rebellion: Sudden nausea or vomiting of clear, watery fluids or white, frothy saliva (often with a "sloshing" sound in the stomach).
"Watery" Dizziness: Vertigo or a feeling of lightheadedness that feels like "walking on a boat," caused by phlegm-fluids clouding the sensory orifices.
Epigastric Fullness: A sensation of pressure or "stuckness" in the upper abdomen that feels better after burping or vomiting.
Dry Heaves: Repeated retching without much being produced, or vomiting immediately after drinking water (Pulsating fluids).
Key Indicator: "Phlegm-Fluids in the Stomach" (Tan Yin)—where the body has failed to transform fluids, and they have pooled in the Stomach, forcing the Qi to "rebel" upward.
Tongue: Pale with a thick, white, slippery, or moist coating.
Pulse: Slippery (Hua) and Wiry (Xuan).

Description
Xiao Ban Xia Jia Fu Ling Tang is a masterclass in TCM fluid dynamics. It doesn't just "stop" vomiting; it addresses the physical accumulation of fluid that causes the vomiting.
Two Exits for Water: This formula uses a "top-down" approach. Ban Xia and Sheng Jiang address the "top" by stopping the rebellion and drying the fluids in the Stomach. Fu Ling addresses the "bottom" by opening the urinary pathway to drain the excess fluid away.
The "Vertigo" Link: In TCM, "Without Phlegm, there is no Vertigo." This formula is a primary choice for Meniere’s disease or motion sickness characterized by a heavy head and a white, greasy tongue coating.
Cold vs. Heat: This is a Warming formula. It uses the heat of Ginger and the drying nature of Pinellia to "thaw" and evaporate cold, stagnant fluids.
Posology
Granules
3 to 9g daily, divided into 2–3 doses. For acute nausea, it is often most effective taken in small, frequent sips rather than one large glass.
Raw Plants
Decoct in 600ml of water. Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) should be sliced thin to maximize its surface area. Traditionally, the decoction is taken warm to further help disperse cold-fluids.
Cautions
Strictly contraindicated for Nausea/Vomiting due to Heat. If the patient has a red tongue, a dry yellow coating, or is vomiting bitter yellow/green bile (Heat in the Gallbladder), this formula is too warming. It is also not for Yin Deficiency (dry mouth, red tongue with no coat). This is specifically for "Cold-Damp" or "Phlegm-Fluid" patterns.
