Dispel the Five Accumulations • Warm the Interior • Release the Exterior
Symptoms
Complex Pain: Chronic body aches, joint pain, or lower back pain that feels "heavy" and is significantly worsened by cold or damp weather.
Digestive Stagnation: Abdominal "hardness," bloating, nausea, and a complete lack of appetite—often described as a "cold" or "dead" stomach.
Menstrual Distress: Severe cramping with dark clots and a cold sensation in the lower abdomen (dysmenorrhea).
Respiratory/Head Congestion: Chronic "cold" phlegm, frontal headaches, and a feeling of being "wrapped in a wet towel."
Key Indicator: "Multiple Overlapping Stagnations"—where the patient is not just suffering from one issue, but a "clogged" system where cold has caused everything from the blood to the digestion to slow down.
Tongue: Pale or dusky with a thick, white, greasy coating.
Pulse: Wiry (Xuan), Tight (Jin), or Choppy (Se).

Description
Wu Ji San is the go-to formula for the "Cold-Damp Constitution." It treats the body like a frozen pipe system that needs both heat and a high-pressure flush.
The "All-Rounder" Strategy: It simultaneously treats the Exterior (skin/muscles), the Middle (digestion), and the Lower (uterus/vessels). This makes it ideal for the "Common Cold" in a person who already has chronic digestive dampness and poor circulation.
Melts the Stagnation: Because Cold is the "contracting" factor that causes the other four accumulations (Damp, Phlegm, Qi, Blood) to stick together, the warming herbs (Gan Jiang, Gui Zhi) are the most critical part of the formula.
Post-Traumatic/Chronic Recovery: It is frequently used for people who have never quite recovered from a cold or an injury, leaving them with a lingering sense of heaviness and "fixed" discomfort.
Posology
Granules
3 to 9g daily, divided into 2–3 doses, taken with warm water.
Raw Plants
Decoct in 1000ml of water. Traditionally, it is often taken with a slice of Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) and Cong Bai (Scallion stalk) to help "push" the formula to the surface of the body.
Cautions
Strictly contraindicated for Heat patterns (fever without chills, red tongue, yellow coating) or Yin Deficiency. Because this formula is incredibly drying and warming, it can "fry" the fluids of a patient who is already dry. Use with caution during pregnancy due to its strong blood-moving and pungent nature.
