Heat-Clearing & Blood-Nourishing • Fire-Draining & Blood-Regulating • Skin-Calming Formula
Symptoms
Skin Disorders & Inflammation: Persistent or recurrent skin conditions characterized by redness, irritation, itching, dryness, or inflammatory lesions, particularly when associated with Blood Heat, internal Fire, and insufficient Blood nourishment.
Chronic Eczema & Dermatitis: Red, itchy, inflamed, or dry skin, sometimes accompanied by scaling, scratching, or recurrent flare-ups. Symptoms may worsen with emotional stress, heat, or constitutional Blood deficiency.
Dryness & Blood Deficiency: Dry skin, rough complexion, brittle nails, or a tendency toward insufficient nourishment of the skin and tissues, reflecting inadequate Blood and Yin support.
Heat Sensations & Irritability: Internal heat, restlessness, irritability, or a sensation of warmth, particularly when emotional tension contributes to the accumulation of Heat in the Blood.
Menstrual Irregularities: Irregular menstruation, prolonged bleeding, heavy menstrual flow, or abnormal uterine bleeding associated with Blood Heat, particularly when accompanied by underlying Blood deficiency.
Emotional Restlessness: Irritability, agitation, disturbed sleep, or difficulty relaxing, reflecting internal Heat disturbing the Shen and the harmonious circulation of Qi and Blood.
Redness & Heat in the Upper Body: Facial flushing, red eyes, sensations of heat in the face, or inflammatory manifestations associated with excessive Heat in the upper body.
Tongue: Red or dark-red, potentially with a yellow coating when Heat is pronounced. In mixed Blood deficiency and Heat patterns, the tongue may appear relatively thin or slightly dry, with reduced coating.
Pulse: Rapid (Shuo), wiry (Xian), or thin and rapid (Xi Shuo), depending on the relative predominance of Heat, Blood deficiency, and Qi stagnation.

Wen Qing Yin (Warm and Clear Decoction) is a traditional Chinese herbal formula designed for patterns of Blood Deficiency accompanied by Blood Heat and internal Fire, particularly when inflammatory manifestations affect the skin, menstrual system, and emotional balance.
The formula combines two classical prescriptions: Huang Lian Jie Du Tang, which clears Heat and drains Fire, and Si Wu Tang, which nourishes and regulates Blood.
From a TCM perspective, Wen Qing Yin addresses both the root (Ben) and branch (Biao) of the pattern, eliminating excessive Heat while restoring Blood nourishment and circulation.
Huang Lian, Huang Qin, Huang Bai, and Zhi Zi work together to clear Heat, drain Fire, cool Blood, and address inflammatory manifestations such as redness, itching, irritability, and Heat-related bleeding.
Shu Di Huang deeply nourishes Blood and Kidney Yin, helping replenish the nourishing substances depleted by prolonged Heat.
Dang Gui and Bai Shao nourish and regulate Blood, support Liver balance, and address dryness, menstrual irregularities, and insufficient tissue nourishment.
Chuan Xiong invigorates Blood and promotes Qi circulation, preventing stagnation and complementing the nourishing properties of the formula.
Clear Heat and drain Fire: Huang Lian, Huang Qin, Huang Bai, and Zhi Zi address excessive internal Heat and inflammatory manifestations.
Nourish Blood and Yin: Shu Di Huang, Dang Gui, and Bai Shao replenish Blood and support skin and tissue nourishment.
Regulate Blood circulation: Chuan Xiong and Dang Gui promote healthy Blood movement and prevent stagnation.
In classical pattern differentiation, Wen Qing Yin is particularly appropriate when Blood Heat and Blood Deficiency coexist, especially in recurrent inflammatory skin conditions and menstrual disturbances associated with internal Heat.
Not appropriate for Cold or Yang Deficiency patterns, particularly when accompanied by cold extremities, loose stools, a pale tongue, or a slow pulse.
Use with caution in patients with Spleen and Stomach Deficiency or significant Dampness, as the bitter-cold herbs may aggravate digestive weakness, while Shu Di Huang may contribute to digestive stagnation.
Not indicated for pure Blood Deficiency without Heat or acute exterior patterns without the characteristic combination of Blood Heat and Blood Deficiency.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Use only under qualified professional supervision, particularly due to the Blood-moving properties of Chuan Xiong.
Medication interactions: Professional assessment is recommended, especially when taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications.
