Clear the Gallbladder • Transform Phlegm • Harmonize the Stomach
Symptoms
Psychological Distress: Anxiety, palpitations, "fright" (being easily startled), insomnia, and vivid, disturbing dreams.
Digestive Disharmony: Nausea, vomiting, a "gnawing" hunger that isn't satisfied by eating, and focal distention (a "stuck" feeling) in the epigastrium.
Phlegm-Heat Signs: Dizziness, vertigo, a bitter taste in the mouth (Gallbladder heat), and copious yellow or thick sputum.
Key Indicator: "Phlegm-Heat Harassing the Interior"—where thick fluids (Phlegm) and heat combine to "clog" the movement of Qi, causing the Mind (Shen) to lose its anchor and the Stomach to lose its downward direction.
Tongue: Red body with a thick, greasy, yellow coating
Pulse: Slippery (Hua) and Rapid (Shu).

Description
Wen Dan Tang addresses the "Brave" Gallbladder when it has become "timid" or "clouded" by phlegm.
The "Warm" Paradox: The name "Warm the Gallbladder" refers to restoring the Gallbladder's healthy, "decisive" function (which is physiologically warm/active) by removing the damp, cold, or turbid phlegm-heat that is currently suffocating it.
The Digestive-Psychological Bridge: In TCM, if the Stomach Qi cannot descend, the Heart-Spirit cannot rest. By clearing the "turbid sludge" (Phlegm) out of the middle burner, the formula clears the "mist" from the Mind.
Neurological Application: Because it clears phlegm-heat from the orifices, it is often used in modern clinics for Meniere’s disease, chronic gastritis, and even certain types of seizures or schizophrenia where phlegm-heat is the primary pattern.
Posology
Granules
3 to 9g daily, divided into 2 doses, taken warm.
Raw Plants
Decoct in 1000ml of water. It is most effective when taken on a relatively empty stomach to allow the herbs to act directly on the "Middle Burner" stagnation.
Cautions
Not indicated for patterns of Yin Deficiency (dry cough, red tongue with no coat). Because Ban Xia and Chen Pi are very drying, they can deplete a patient who is already suffering from a lack of fluids. Use with caution in cases of severe Spleen deficiency without phlegm signs. Discontinue once the greasy tongue coating clears and the anxiety/nausea subsides.
