Symptoms

Postpartum Abdominal Pain: Sharp, cramping, or "stabbing" pain in the lower abdomen following childbirth, which often worsens with pressure.

Lochia Obstruction: Retention of lochia (post-birth discharge), or lochia that is scanty, dark, and filled with purple clots.

Cold in the Uterus: A subjective feeling of coldness in the pelvic region; pain that feels significantly better with the application of a heating pad.

Delayed Recovery: A slow return of the uterus to its pre-pregnancy size (involution) due to "Old Blood" blocking the way.

Key Indicator: "Blood Stasis with Cold Obstruction"—where the trauma of birth and the loss of Yang energy allow cold to enter the uterus, causing the remaining blood to congeal like "ice in a pipe."

Tongue: Pale-purple or dark body, possibly with stasis spots.

Pulse: Choppy (Se) or Deep and Wiry (Chen Xuan).

Description

Sheng Hua Tang is a "Warm-and-Move" formula. It acknowledges that a woman is at her most "Deficient" and "Cold" immediately after birth, so it moves blood without being overly aggressive or draining.

The Blood Commander (Dang Gui): Used in a very high dose (often 24–30g), it performs the "Generate and Transform" miracle simultaneously. It tonifies the blood (Generating) while its acrid properties move the blood (Transforming).

The Qi of Blood (Chuan Xiong): It moves the Qi within the blood vessels. This "pushes" the stasis out and is particularly effective at relieving the sharp, cramping pain of the contracting uterus.

The Stasis Breaker (Tao Ren): Peach kernel is the specialist for breaking up the actual physical clots (stasis) so they can be expelled.

The Warming Interior (Pao Jiang): Unlike fresh ginger, Prepared Ginger (Pao Jiang) stays in the lower burner. It warms the "Liver-channel" and the Uterus, "melting" the cold that causes blood to stagnate.

The Harmonizer (Zhi Gan Cao): It enters the Spleen to support Qi production and coordinates the other herbs to ensure the "Moving" action doesn't exhaust the mother.

Posology

Granules

3 to 9g daily, divided into 2 doses, taken with warm water.

Raw Plants

Decoct in 800ml of water. Traditionally, it is often decocted with a small amount of yellow rice wine (Huang Jiu), which enhances the formula’s ability to warm the channels and move stasis. Timing: Usually taken for 3 to 7 days immediately postpartum. It is not a long-term tonic.

Cautions

STRICTLY CONTRAINDICATED during pregnancy. This formula is designed to empty the uterus. Do not use if there is excessive postpartum bleeding (hemorrhage) or if there are signs of Heat in the Blood (bright red blood, fever, red tongue). Discontinue use once the lochia becomes light in color and the abdominal pain subsides.
