Clear Lung Heat & Support Righteous Qi • The "Cooling Support" Formula
Clear Lung Heat & Support Righteous Qi • The "Cooling Support" Formula
Symptoms
Heat-Type Cough: A loud, forceful cough often accompanied by thick, yellow, or sticky sputum that is difficult to expectorate.
Respiratory Distress: Wheezing, shortness of breath, or a distinct sensation of "heaviness" and oppression in the chest.
Systemic Heat: A persistent fever or a subjective feeling of heat in the chest, paired with a thirst for cold drinks and a dry throat.
Paradoxical Fatigue: Despite the "excess" signs (loud cough, fever), the patient feels deeply exhausted or "short of air" upon minimal exertion.
Key Indicator: "Lung Fire with Underlying Qi Deficiency"—where the Lungs are being scorched by heat, but the body's Zheng Qi is too weak to clear the inflammation or move the fluids.
Tongue: Red body with a thick, yellow coating.
Pulse: Rapid (Shu) and forceful, but may become weak (Xu) upon deeper pressure.

Description
Ren Shen Xie Fei Tang mirrors the strategy of the famous Bai Hu Jia Ren Shen Tang, but focuses specifically on the "Descending" function of the Lungs.
The Cooling "Fire Extinguishers" (Shi Gao & Huang Qin): Shi Gao is the strongest mineral for clearing Lung and Stomach fire. Huang Qin specifically targets the "Upper Burner" to drain heat and dry the yellow phlegm.
The Fluid Protector (Zhi Mu): Because intense heat evaporates fluids, Zhi Mu acts as a "moisturizer" for the Lungs, clearing heat while preventing the tissues from becoming brittle and dry.
The Cough-Suppressing Duo (Sang Bai Pi & Xing Ren): Sang Bai Pi drains heat-fluids from the Lungs to stop wheezing, while Xing Ren directs the Lung Qi downward, stopping the cough and helping the patient catch their breath.
The Support Beam (Ren Shen): This is the "Safety Net." It prevents the extremely cold nature of the other herbs from damaging the Spleen and ensures the Lungs have enough "Qi" to perform the act of breathing and expectoration.
Posology
Granules
3 to 9g daily, divided into 2 doses, taken with warm water.
Raw Plants
Decoct in 1000ml of water. Note: Shi Gao should traditionally be crushed and pre-boiled for 20–30 minutes to ensure its minerals are fully extracted before adding the other herbs.
Cautions
Strictly contraindicated for coughs caused by Wind-Cold (chills, thin white phlegm) or Yin Deficiency without actual excess heat. Because it contains high doses of cooling minerals, it should be used with caution in patients with very weak digestion (loose stools). Discontinue use once the yellow phlegm and fever have subsided.
