Symptoms

Chronic Cough: A loud, barking, or productive cough that is worse in the morning.

Sticky Phlegm: Expectoration is difficult; phlegm is yellow, thick, and may have a strong odor.

Chest Discomfort: A sensation of "fullness" or slight pain in the chest when coughing.

Irritability: Dryness in the throat and mouth, often with a bitter taste.

General Heat: Shortness of breath, or a feeling of "heat" in the chest area.

Tongue: Red body with a thick, yellow, and greasy coating.

Pulse: Slippery (Hua) and rapid (Shuo).

Posology

Granules
3 to 9g per day after main meals, diluted in hot water.

Description

Qing Fei Tang works like a "systemic sweep" for the lungs, thinning the mucus while cooling the inflammation.

Huang Qin and Sang Bai Pi are the Chiefs; they aggressively drain heat from the Lungs and direct the Lung Qi downward to stop coughing.

Bei Mu and Xing Ren are the Deputies; Bei Mu transforms stubborn, thick phlegm, while Xing Ren restores the descending function of the Lung.

Mai Men Dong ensures that the "Lung Metal" is not dried out by the bitter clearing herbs, providing essential moisture.

Dang Gui is added to "harmonize the Blood" in the Lungs; chronic coughing often leads to Blood Stasis in the chest—this keeps the microcirculation moving.

Fu Ling and Chen Pi address the "Source of Phlegm" (the Spleen) to prevent new mucus from forming.

Contraindications

STRICTLY CONTRAINDICATED for Wind-Cold Cough (clear/white watery phlegm, chills).

Not for use in cases of Spleen/Stomach Deficiency with diarrhea (due to the many cold/bitter herbs).

Discontinue use if the phlegm becomes white and watery.
