PLANT DESCRIPTION

This pattern is characterized by heat lodged in the Lungs, obstructing the flow of qi. Symptoms include fever (with or without sweating), thirst, wheezing, coughing, labored breathing, nasal flaring, a thin tongue coating (white or yellow), and a rapid, floating or slippery pulse. The heat may result from externally-contracted wind-heat or from wind-cold that has transformed into heat. Obstruction of Lung qi leads to upward rebellion, causing wheezing, while internal heat forces fluids outward as sweat. The tongue and pulse reflect the depth of the pathogen: a white coating and floating pulse indicate lingering exterior involvement, whereas a yellow coating and slippery, rapid pulse indicate full interior Lung heat.

Armeniacae Semen (xing ren) assists in guiding rebellious Lung qi downward, and Glycyrrhizae Radix preparata (zhi gan cao) harmonizes the formula, moistens the Lungs, and stops coughing. Dosages of the chief herbs are adjusted according to the severity of Lung heat and the presence of exterior conditions.
