Symptoms

Summer-Heat symptoms: Fever, dizziness, and a heavy sensation in the head.

Urinary distress: Scanty, dark, or painful urination (dysuria).

Thirst with a desire for cold drinks.

Irritability and restlessness (Fan Zao).

Possible nausea or watery diarrhea due to dampness.

Tongue: Red body with a thin, yellow, and slippery/greasy coating.

Pulse: Soft (Ru) and rapid (Shuo), or Flooding (Hong).

Ingredients

Hua Shi (Talcum)
Raw Herbs 18g Granules 85.7g

Gan Cao (Glycyrrhiza uralensis)
Raw Herbs 3g Granules 14.3g

Posology

Granules
3 to 9g per day after main meals, diluted in hot water.

Raw Herbs
Boil in 1000–1200ml of water and drink 1 to 3 cups per day.

Description

Liu Yi San is a "cooling and slippery" formula. Its goal is to create a clear exit for Heat and Dampness by opening the water passages of the Lower Burner.

Hua Shi (Talcum) is the chief; it is cold and slippery. It clears Heat and "leaches" dampness, specifically unblocking the bladder to "guide the heat out" via the urine.

Gan Cao (Licorice) is the deputy; it clears heat, harmonizes the Middle Burner, and prevents the cold/dandruff nature of the Talcum from injuring the Stomach.

Together, they create a "Sweet and Cold" combination that transforms Heat and generates Fluids without causing stagnation.

Contraindications

Contraindicated for Pregnancy (the slippery and downward-draining nature of Talcum is high-risk).

Not for use in cases of Spontaneous Sweating or fluid depletion without heat.

Not suitable for urinary difficulty due to Kidney Yang deficiency (Cold signs).

Discontinue once the Summer-Heat symptoms and urinary pain have resolved.
