Nourish Lung Yin & Clear Lingering Heat • Moistening & Antitussive Formula
Nourish Lung Yin & Clear Lingering Heat • Moistening & Antitussive Formula
Symptoms
Dry or Irritative Cough: A persistent, "barking" or tickling cough that produces little to no sputum.
Scanty, Sticky Sputum: If any mucus is produced, it is very thick, difficult to expectorate, and may be blood streaked.
Throat Distress: A chronically dry, "scratchy" throat, often accompanied by hoarseness or loss of voice.
Deficiency Heat Signs: Low-grade afternoon fevers, night sweats, and a "malar flush" (redness over the cheekbones).
Sensory Dryness: Dryness of the mouth and nose, often worsening at night.
Key Indicator: "Lung Yin Depletion with Empty Fire"—where the Lung’s delicate tissues have been "scorched" by lingering heat (often following a severe flu), leaving them unable to descend Qi properly.
Tongue: Red body with little to no coating (peeled) and possible cracks; Pulse: Thin and rapid.

Posology
Granules: 3 to 9g daily, divided into 2–3 doses, taken with warm water.
Raw Plants: Decoct in 800–1000ml of water. Drink 1 to 3 cups per day. To maximize the "moistening" effect, it is best taken in small, frequent sips to coat the throat.
Description
Jia Wei Yang Yin Qing Fei Tang is a sophisticated "Hydrating" formula. In TCM, the Lungs are the "Tender Organ" ($Jiao$ $Zang$) and cannot tolerate dryness. This formula uses a "Cooling-Moistening" strategy to restore the Lungs' ability to "mist" the body with fluids.
The Yin-Nourishing Trio (Sheng Di, Mai Men Dong, Xuan Shen): These are the "heavy hitters" for replenishing fluids. They act like a cool rain on parched earth, nourishing the Kidneys (the Root) and the Lungs (the Leaf) simultaneously to anchor floating heat.
Clearing the Blood Heat (Mu Dan Pi): This herb cools the blood and clears "hidden" heat that stays deep in the tissues, preventing the cough from returning in the evening.
Transforming Sticky Phlegm (Bei Mu): Unlike other phlegm herbs that are drying, Bei Mu is moistening. It dissolves the "rubber-like" scanty sputum that gets stuck in the bronchioles.
Preserving the Yin (Bai Shao): It "collects" the Yin and prevents the Lungs from over-dispersing, while also relaxing the smooth muscles of the throat to stop coughing spasms.
Harmonizing (Gan Cao): It coordinates the other herbs and specifically moistens the throat to relieve pain.
Cautions
Strictly contraindicated for coughs caused by Wind-Cold (chills, clear mucus, white tongue coat) or Damp-Phlegm (copious white bubbly mucus). Because this formula is very rich and moistening, it will "lock in" a cold and make a damp cough much worse. Use with caution in those with Spleen Deficiency (weak digestion/loose stools), as the rich Yin tonics can be heavy to digest. Discontinue once the dry cough and night sweats have resolved.
