Posology
Granules: 3 to 9g per day, divided into 2 doses, taken with warm water.
Raw Plants: Boil in 1000ml of water and drink 1 to 2 cups per day. Because of the Mang Xiao (Salt) and Da Huang (Rhubarb), expect a mild to moderate laxative effect.
Description
Huang Lian Shang Qing Wan uses a "Multi-Exit" strategy. It acknowledges that when the "chimney" (the throat and head) is on fire, you must open the windows (vent the surface) and clear the basement (purge the bowels) to create a draft that pulls the heat away.
The Three Yellows + Zhi Zi: Form the cooling core to drain fire from the blood and internal organs.
Bo He, Jing Jie, and Lian Qiao: These are light, aromatic herbs. They "vent" the heat from the skin and sensory orifices, providing immediate relief for red eyes and sore throats.
Chuan Xiong & Dang Gui: Chuan Xiong is a "Wind-Leading" herb that directs the formula specifically to the head to treat headaches. Dang Gui ensures the blood doesn't become "cooked" or stagnant from the intense heat.
Da Huang & Mang Xiao: These are the "Heavy Hitters." By purging the Yang Ming (Stomach/Large Intestine) layer, they "pull" the rising fire back down. This is the "釜底抽薪" (fǔ dǐ chōu xīn) strategy—"taking the wood out from under the cauldron."
Cautions
Strictly contraindicated during pregnancy due to the strong downward moving and purgative nature of the herbs. Not for use in elderly or weak patients with Spleen deficiency. This is a very "dispersing" formula; it should be discontinued as soon as the constipation is relieved and the facial inflammation subsides. Long-term use will deplete the body's Qi. Consult a practitioner before use.
