Symptoms

Posology

Granules: 3 to 9g per day, divided into 2–3 doses, taken with warm water.

Raw Plants: Boil in 1000ml of water and drink 1 to 3 cups per day. Because this decoction is exceptionally bitter, it is sometimes taken in small, frequent sips.

Description

Huang Lian Jie Du Tang treats the body like a house on fire. It doesn't look to repair the structure yet; its only goal is to put out the flames across all three "floors" (the Three Burners) of the body.

Huang Lian (Chief): Focuses on the Middle Burner (Heart and Stomach). It is the strongest herb for draining fire and resolving toxicity.

Huang Qin (Deputy): Focuses on the Upper Burner (Lungs). It clears heat from the chest and head, addressing the red face and irritability.

Huang Bai (Assistant): Focuses on the Lower Burner (Kidneys and Bladder). It drains damp-heat downward, addressing the dark urine and lower-body inflammation.

Zhi Zi (Envoy): Acts as the "drainage pipe." It has the unique ability to guide heat from all three burners out through the urine, ensuring the fire has an exit strategy.

Together, these four "Yellow" herbs (as three of them share the name Huang, meaning yellow) provide a comprehensive systemic cooling effect.

Cautions

Strictly contraindicated for anyone with a "Cold" constitution or Spleen deficiency (loose stools, pale tongue, cold limbs). This formula is incredibly bitter and cold; long-term use will severely damage the digestive fire. It is intended for short-term, acute use only.
