Description
Gui Zhi Tang is a foundational formula for Wind-Cold exterior patterns with deficiency, particularly when the body’s defensive (Wei) Qi is weak and unable to properly regulate the pores. This leads to spontaneous sweating and vulnerability to external pathogens.
The formula works by releasing the exterior while simultaneously harmonizing Ying and Wei, rather than strongly inducing sweating like Ma Huang Tang.
Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) is the chief herb. It warms the channels, releases Wind-Cold, and harmonizes the defensive Qi, restoring proper circulation at the surface.
Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix alba) nourishes the nutritive (Ying) level and preserves fluids. It balances Gui Zhi’s warming action and helps regulate sweating.
Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma recens) assists in releasing the exterior and warms the middle burner, supporting digestion during acute illness.
Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus) tonifies Qi and Blood, protecting the Spleen and preventing excessive depletion.
Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix) harmonizes the formula and moderates the interaction between Gui Zhi and Bai Shao.
Together, the formula releases Wind-Cold gently, harmonizes Ying and Wei, regulates sweating, and restores surface balance, making it ideal for deficiency-type exterior conditions.
