Harmonize Ying & Wei • Relax the Muscles • Fluid-Nourishing Formula
Harmonize Ying & Wei • Relax the Muscles • Fluid-Nourishing Formula
Symptoms
Upper Body Rigidity: Distinct stiffness in the neck and upper back; the patient feels they have "slept wrong" or has a "frozen" feeling in the shoulders.
Mild Exterior Signs: Slight fever and aversion to wind/cold, often accompanied by spontaneous sweating (indicating the pores are not tightly closed as in an "excess" pattern).
Headache: Dull ache at the occiput (base of the skull) that radiates toward the neck.
Tai Yang Deficiency: Unlike the "Excess" pattern (which has no sweat), this patient is leaking sweat, meaning their Wei Qi (Defense) is too weak to hold the exterior.
Key Indicator: "Wind-Cold with Fluid Constraint"—where the cold has blocked the fluids from reaching the muscles, causing them to "dry out" and seize up.
Tongue: Pale or pink with a thin white, moist coating.
Pulse: Floating (Fu) and Moderate (Huan).

Description
Gui Zhi Jia Ge Gen Tang works by "moistening the muscles" while gently pushing the pathogen out. Because it lacks the aggressive Ma Huang, it is safe for weaker patients, the elderly, or those with heart palpitations.
The Chief Hydrator (Ge Gen): Kudzu root is the "Star" here. It lifts the clear fluids of the Spleen upward to the neck and back. It "soaks" the tight muscles in fluids, effectively "thawing" the stiffness.
The Harmonizing Pair (Gui Zhi & Bai Shao): This is the core of Gui Zhi Tang. Gui Zhi warms the channels and releases the exterior, while Bai Shao astringes the Yin and nourishes the blood. Together, they stop the inappropriate sweating and balance the body's internal and external energies.
The Digestive Guard (Sheng Jiang, Da Zao, Gan Cao): These three ensure the Spleen is strong enough to produce the fluids that Ge Gen needs to transport to the neck.
Posology
Granules
3 to 9g daily, divided into 2 doses, taken with warm water.
Raw Plants
Decoct in 1000ml of water. After taking the decoction, it is traditional to drink a bowl of hot rice porridge to help the "Spleen" generate the fluids needed to facilitate a very mild, restorative sweat.
Cautions
Not indicated for Exterior Excess (where there is no sweating and a very tight pulse)—in those cases, Ge Gen Tang with Ma Huang is required. Avoid use in cases of Interior Heat (red tongue, yellow coat, high thirst). Because this formula is tonifying, using it when a strong pathogen is present without deficiency may "trap" the pathogen inside.
