Release the Exterior & Relax the Muscles • The "Stiff Neck" Formula
Release the Exterior & Relax the Muscles • The "Stiff Neck" Formula
Symptoms
Exterior Cold Pattern: Aversion to cold, chills, and fever without sweating.
Severe Muscle Rigidity: A distinctive "pulling" or "tight" sensation in the upper back and neck. The patient finds it difficult or painful to turn their head.
Tai Yang Headache: Pain located at the occiput (base of the skull) and vertex.
Early Stage GI Distress: Sometimes used when a "cold" pathogen causes a sudden onset of watery diarrhea without a foul odor.
Key Indicator: "Wind-Cold Constricting the Muscle Layer"—where the cold has "frozen" the fluids in the muscles, leading to a lack of nourishment to the tendons and resulting in stiffness.
Tongue: Pink with a thin, white, moist coating.
Pulse: Floating (Fu) and Tight (Jin).

Description
Ge Gen Tang is essentially an evolution of Gui Zhi Tang. Ge Gen to specifically hydrate the muscles.
The Muscle Relaxant (Ge Gen): It "generates fluids" and directs them to the muscles and tendons of the neck and back. This "moistens" the stiffness away while helping to vent the pathogen through the skin.
The Diaphoretic Duo (Gui Zhi): Gui Zhi warms the channels (Ying Qi level), inducing a mild sweat to release the cold.
The Nutritive Support (Bai Shao & Da Zao): These prevent the formula from being too drying. Bai Shao softens the Liver/Tendons to help Ge Gen relieve the cramping, while Da Zao protects the stomach.
Posology
Granules: 3 to 9g daily, divided into 2 doses, taken with warm water. Raw Plants: Decoct in 1000ml of water. It is traditionally advised to take the decoction while warm and then cover up with a blanket to encourage a mild "fine" sweat (Wei Wei Si Han).
Cautions
Strictly contraindicated in cases of sweating due to deficiency. If the patient is already sweating. Discontinue use once the "stiffness" and "chills" have resolved.
