Warm Yang & Unblock Channels • Cold-Predominant Bi Formula
Symptoms
Intense Joint/Muscle Pain: Fixed, "boring" pain that feels like it is in the bones, significantly worsened by cold or rainy weather.
Limited Mobility: Extreme stiffness where the patient feels they need to "thaw out" before they can move in the morning.
Heavy Sensations: The limbs feel like lead, often accompanied by mild swelling that does not feel hot to the touch.
Systemic Cold: Cold extremities, a constant preference for hot baths or heating pads, and a general lack of thirst.
Key Indicator: "Yang Deficiency with Wind-Damp Obstruction"—where the body lacks the "Circulatory Fire" to keep the channels open, allowing dampness to congeal like ice in the joints.
Tongue: Pale and wet with a thin white coating.
Pulse: Deep and slow, or faint and tight (Chén Chí Wēi Jǐn).

Description
Gan Cao Fu Zi Tang uses a four-way "Synergistic Heat" strategy to break through structural stagnation:
The Circulator (Gui Zhi): Gui Zhi acts as the "Fan." It pushes that warmth out to the surface and the extremities, unblocking the Tai Yang channel and releasing the "Wind" component of the pain.
The Dehumidifier (Bai Zhu): Dampness is the "glue" that keeps the pain fixed. Bai Zhu dries this dampness in the middle burner and the joints, making the limbs feel lighter.
The Harmonizer & Buffer (Zhi Gan Cao): In this specific formula, a higher dose of Gan Cao is used to "sweeten and moderate" the acridity of the other herbs, ensuring the Yang is built steadily without over-stimulating the Heart.
Cautions
Strictly contraindicated for Heat Bi (joints that are red, swollen, and hot). Using these warming herbs on an inflamed joint is like adding gasoline to a fire. Not for use in pregnancy or in patients with Yin deficiency (dryness/night sweats). Discontinue use once the intense cold and fixed pain have diminished.
