Dao Tan Tang "guides out" (Dao) the phlegm (Tan) by drying dampness and forcefully moving the Qi. It is more aggressive than the basic Er Chen Tang because it adds herbs to break through physical and energetic blockages.
Zhi Ban Xia is the chief; it dries dampness and descends rebellious Qi to stop nausea and resolve phlegm.
Dan Nan Xing (Arisaema prepared with bile) is the deputy; it is powerful at transforming "Wind-Phlegm" and clearing phlegm from the channels and orifices.
Zhi Shi breaks up stagnant Qi and expands the chest, allowing the phlegm to be moved and expelled.
Ju Hong and Fu Ling address the "source" of the phlegm by strengthening the Spleen and regulating Qi.
Sheng Jiang assists Ban Xia in descending Qi and reduces the potential toxicity of the phlegm-clearing herbs.
Contraindicated for Dry Cough or cough due to Yin deficiency (no phlegm).
Use with caution in patients with severe Spleen/Stomach Deficiency without significant phlegm.
Not for use in cases of Extreme Heat or Fire (unless modified with additional cooling herbs).
Pregnancy: Use with extreme caution and only if Phlegm-Dampness is the primary diagnosis.
