Description
Fang Ji Huang Qi Tang addresses a pattern in which deficient Wei Qi fails to regulate the pores, allowing wind and dampness to invade the superficial layers of the body. At the same time, weakened Spleen Qi is unable to properly transform and transport fluids, resulting in edema and heaviness.
Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) is the chief herb. It dispels wind-dampness from the muscles and skin while promoting urination to reduce edema. It relieves joint discomfort and helps clear obstructed fluid pathways.
Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) tonifies Qi and strengthens the exterior. By consolidating Wei Qi, it helps regulate sweating and prevent further invasion of wind. It also supports fluid metabolism and enhances the diuretic action of Fang Ji.
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis macrocephalae Rhizoma) strengthens the Spleen and dries dampness. It reinforces the body’s ability to transform fluids, preventing further accumulation.
Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix) harmonizes the formula, supports Spleen Qi, and moderates the dispersing properties of Fang Ji.
Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus) nourishes Qi and Blood while protecting digestive function, ensuring the draining herbs do not weaken the patient.
Together, the formula expels wind-dampness, promotes urination, strengthens the Spleen, and consolidates Wei Qi, making it particularly suited for edema with spontaneous sweating and underlying Qi deficiency.
