Symptoms

Dull, persistent abdominal pain (cramping or dragging sensation).

Edema or swelling (puffiness in the face, heavy limbs).

Irregular menstruation or dysmenorrhea with a pale flow.

Posology

Granules
3 to 9g per day after main meals, diluted in hot water.

Description

Dang Gui Shao Yao San addresses a "Liver-Spleen Disharmony" where Blood deficiency leads to Liver stagnation (causing pain), while Spleen deficiency leads to Dampness (causing swelling).

Bai Shao is the chief herb; used in a high dose to soften the Liver, nourish the Blood, and stop abdominal spasms.

Dang Gui and Chuan Xiong work as the "Blood Team" to move and nourish the blood, ensuring that stagnation doesn't lead to sharp pain.

Bai Zhu and Fu Ling strengthen the Spleen and transform Dampness.

Ze Xie provides the "drainage," leaching the accumulated fluids out through the urine to resolve edema and abdominal pressure.

Contraindications

Contraindicated for patterns of Excess Heat or Fire (red tongue with yellow coating).

Not suitable for abdominal pain caused by Food Stagnation.

Use with caution in cases of severe Yin deficiency.

While safe for pregnancy, it must be prescribed by a qualified professional to ensure the diagnosis of "Dampness vs. Blood Deficiency" is accurate.
