Chai Lian Tang is a harmonizing and clearing formula designed to resolve Shao Yang disorders, harmonize the exterior and interior, clear Heat, drain Dampness, and strengthen the Spleen. It combines herbs that release exterior Wind-Heat and harmonize Shao Yang, with herbs that tonify Qi and strengthen Spleen/Stomach, as well as diuretics to remove internal Dampness.

Symptoms 

  • Alternating chills and fever (Shao Yang disorder)

  • Sensation of fullness in chest and hypochondria

  • Nausea, vomiting, hiccups

  • Loose stools, watery or profuse Phlegm

  • Edema, scanty urine, or vaginal discharge

  • Fatigue, palpitations, shortness of breath

  • Tongue with damp coating, wiry or deficient pulse

These symptoms reflect a combination of Shao Yang Heat, internal Dampness, Spleen Qi deficiency, and impaired fluid metabolism.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Directions of use:

  • Take 3 to 5g, 3 times a day diluted in hot water.

  • Avoid in cold-damp patterns or deficient Yang without Heat, as the formula is warming and clearing.

  • Use carefully in weak Spleen patients prone to loose stools, as many clearing herbs may irritate digestion.

Jie Geng, Bo He, Niu Bang Zi guide herbs to the upper body, treat cough, sore throat.

Harmonizing Middle Jiao & Qi:
Gan Cao, Fang Feng harmonize digestive and immune functions, moderate harsh effects, and release the exterior.

  • Often applied in cases of menstrual pain, headaches, cough with yellow phlegm, or mild fever with irritability.

  • Typically prepared as a decoction, taken 2–3 times daily.

  • May be modified for specific symptoms, such as adding Huang Bai or Zhi Zi for more pronounced heat or Fang Feng for stronger exterior release.
