Description
The Middle Qi Lifting Formula is a classical herbal composition designed to strengthen the Spleen and Stomach, restore the proper direction of qi movement, and raise clear yang that has become deficient or sunken. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the middle burner governs digestion, transformation, and the upward movement of clear qi. When this system weakens, qi loses its ability to ascend, leading to fatigue, weakness, and functional collapse rather than coordinated movement.
This formula addresses both the root and manifestation of sinking middle qi. The root lies in Spleen qi deficiency, while the manifestation appears as downward sinking, lack of vitality, and impaired digestive function. By combining strong qi-tonifying herbs with agents that gently lift and guide yang upward, the formula restores dynamic balance without creating excess.
Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) serves as the chief herb, powerfully tonifying Spleen qi and reinforcing the body’s ability to lift and hold clear yang. It strengthens the exterior while supporting internal structure, making it especially effective when fatigue is accompanied by a sense of heaviness or collapse.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) works in concert with Huang Qi to deeply nourish source qi, strengthen digestion, and support overall vitality. Its action ensures that the upward movement of qi is supported by sufficient substance rather than forced.
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis macrocephalae Rhizoma) reinforces the Spleen’s transformative function, dries dampness, and stabilizes the middle burner. By improving digestion and fluid metabolism, it prevents further qi depletion and supports sustained energy.
Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root) harmonizes the formula, tonifies Spleen qi, and moderates tension or weakness in the middle burner. It also ensures smooth cooperation among the herbs, supporting long-term balance.
Chen Pi (Citri reticulatae Pericarpium) regulates qi, improves digestion, and prevents stagnation that can arise when tonifying herbs are used. It keeps the middle burner moving freely, ensuring that nourishment does not become cloying.
Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) and Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) act as guiding herbs, gently lifting clear yang and directing qi upward. Sheng Ma raises pure yang from the middle burner, while Chai Hu spreads and smooths Liver qi, ensuring that the lifting action is coordinated rather than abrupt or constrained.
Dang Shen (Codonopsis Radix): Tonifies Spleen and Stomach Qi, strengthens the middle burner, supports Wei Qi, harmonizes other herbs, and gently boosts energy without overstimulating
Together, these herbs restore the natural ascending movement of qi, strengthen digestive function, and support structural integrity throughout the body. The result is renewed vitality, improved digestion, and a sense of lightness and internal support rather than heaviness or collapse.
Contraindications
Avoid in pure deficiency patterns without signs of Liver Qi stagnation.
Use caution in cases of diarrhea, Spleen weakness, or cold digestion, as dispersing herbs may aggravate the condition.
