Nourish the Heart & Calm the Spirit • Tonify Yin & Blood

Bai Zi Yang Xin Wan (Cypress Seed Heart-Nourishing Pill) is a classic "Sedative & Tonic" formula. While other spirit-calming formulas focus purely on clearing heat or heavy sedation, this formula focuses on nourishing the deficit. It is designed for those whose anxiety and restlessness stem from the Heart and Kidney being unable to communicate, leaving the "Spirit" with no place to rest.

Symptoms

Severe Palpitations: A racing heart or "fluttering" sensation in the chest, often triggered by startle or stress.

Insomnia & Dream-Disturbed Sleep: Difficulty falling asleep or waking up frequently from vivid, exhausting dreams.

Mental Fatigue: Poor memory, inability to concentrate, and a general sense of being "dazed" or easily startled (Jing Ji).

Night Sweats: Spontaneous sweating during sleep, indicating a deficiency of Yin and Blood.

Key Indicator: "Heart-Kidney Non-Communication"—where the Heart lacks the Blood to house the mind, and the Kidneys lack the Yin to keep the Heart's "fire" from flaring upward.

Tongue: Pale or slightly red body with a thin, dry coating.

Pulse: Thin (Xi) and Weak (Ruò), or Rapid and Thin.

Description

This formula acts as a "Liquid Anchor" for the mind. It doesn't just force you to sleep; it builds the biological and energetic reserves necessary for peace.

Nourishing the Oil: Think of the Heart-Spirit as a flame. If the oil (Blood/Yin) is low, the flame flickers wildly (anxiety/palpitations). Bai Zi Ren and Shu Di Huang refill the oil so the flame burns steadily.

Opening the Portals: The inclusion of Shi Chang Pu is the "secret weapon" for brain fog. It clears the "phlegm mists" that cover the Heart, allowing for mental clarity and better cognitive function.

Bridging the Gap: By tonifying the Kidneys (Gou Qi Zi) while clearing the Heart (Mai Men Dong), the formula re-establishes the vertical axis of the body, allowing the "Water" of the Kidneys to rise and cool the "Fire" of the Heart.

Posology

Granules

4.5 to 9g daily, taken with warm water. Best taken about 1 hour before bed or in the evening.

Raw Herbs: Decoct in 800ml of water down to 300ml.

Cautions

Not for Excess Phlegm or Heat. If you have a very thick, greasy yellow tongue coating or acute anger-based mania, this formula is too tonifying and may cause "clumping." Loose Stools: Because Bai Zi Ren is an oily seed, it can have a mild laxative effect; use with caution if you have a weak Spleen or chronic diarrhea.

HEALTH Characteristics

This formula exemplifies the strategy of clearing heat using acrid, cold, and sweet substances, ideal when excess heat coincides with body fluid depletion. Gypsum fibrosum (shi gao) is the chief herb, clearing interior heat, releasing heat from the muscles and skin, and nourishing yin to generate fluids. Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (zhi mu) assists by clearing heat from the Lungs and Stomach while moistening dryness. Glycyrrhizae Radix preparata (zhi gan cao) and nonglutinous rice support the Stomach, protect fluids, and prevent damage from the cold properties of the main herbs. Together, these four ingredients clear severe heat without harming the qi or body fluids.
