Ba Wei Di Huang Wan is a classical formula used to warm and tonify Kidney Yang, while simultaneously supporting Kidney Yin and Essence. It is a foundational prescription for patterns of Kidney Yang deficiency, particularly when declining Ming Men Fire impairs warmth, vitality, and fluid metabolism.

This formula builds upon Liu Wei Di Huang Wan by adding warming herbs to address Cold and Yang deficiency, making it suitable when deficiency is accompanied by Cold signs.

Clinical indications

Traditionally used in presentations such as:

• Sensation of Cold, especially in the lower back and limbs

• Fatigue and lack of vitality

• Soreness or weakness of the lower back and knees

• Frequent or profuse urination

• Oedema or fluid retention

• Decreased libido or reproductive weakness

• Pale tongue with moist coating

• Deep, weak pulse

Pattern focus

This formula treats Kidney Yang deficiency, often with concurrent Yin deficiency, where warming and support of Ming Men Fire are required to restore physiological balance.

Symptoms are rooted in Cold and deficiency, not excess or Heat.

Cautions

• Not indicated for Heat patterns or Yin deficiency with pronounced empty Heat

• Use with caution in patients with significant Damp-Heat or excess conditions
