Description

Gan Mai Da Zao Tang focuses on Heart Yin deficiency with restless spirit, a pattern often termed Zang Zao (Restless Organ Disorder). The formula addresses both the root and branch by nourishing Heart Yin, harmonizing the Middle Burner, and moderating emotional overactivity.

Gan Cao (Licorice Root) – Harmonizes the formula, strengthens Spleen Qi, and soothes the Heart. It moderates spasms, calms palpitations, and supports the digestive system to prevent nutrient loss.

Fu Xiao Mai (Wheat Grain / Tritici Fructus Levis) – Nourishes Heart Yin and augments the blood, calming emotional hyperactivity and spontaneous sweating. It stabilizes the exterior and alleviates tension and irritability.

Da Zao (Jujube Fruit / Jujubae Fructus) – Tonifies Spleen Qi and Blood, harmonizes the Middle Burner, and gently nourishes the Heart, creating a balanced effect on energy and emotions.

Together, these herbs restore emotional balance, stabilize Qi and Blood, nourish Heart Yin, and prevent further overexcitation of the spirit, making it suitable for anxiety, post-illness restlessness, or chronic emotional disturbances.

HEALTH Characteristics

In traditional Chinese medicine, the ethereal and corporeal souls drift in and out with the spirit and essence, sometimes losing their proper attachment to the body. To restore balance, a simple yet powerful formula uses three herbs to guide these wandering souls back to their proper place. The chief herb, Xiao Mai (Tritici Fructus), is sweet and slightly salty. Light in weight, it reaches outward to the exterior, yet also enters the Heart channel, conserving fluids and stabilizing the spirit. Traditionally associated with the Heart and used for spontaneous or night sweats, it here serves to control the dispersal of the souls.

Supporting herbs include Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix), which nourishes the Heart, tonifies the qi, harmonizes the middle burner, and clears heat when used in its unprocessed form; and Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus), which augments qi, moistens internal dryness, and regulates pathogenic qi in the Heart and abdomen. Together, these three simple herbs accomplish what might seem impossible: they gently return the floating souls within the bounds of normal behavior, allowing the patient to feel centered and at ease.

The spirit is yang in nature, subtle and unattached to any substance, difficult to influence with herbs alone. Yet by nourishing the nutritive yin through the Heart, this formula roots the spirit and pacifies the wandering soul, demonstrating the profound power of simplicity in healing.
